…is to be grateful for the gift of life, to always remember what brought me to where I am today, and to make the most of life by prioritizing what is of highest value.
I have lived a relatively comfortable twenty-nine years, and I owe it all to my mother, who struggled from poverty to provide her family with the best things in life. The stories of her checkered life are truly inspiring: having to eat just one meal a day and work long hours after school to feed her younger siblings, having to borrow money just to purchase milk for me when I was a baby…the list of hardships goes on. But my mother worked diligently throughout her life, put herself through medical school and eventually went on to become a successful doctor.
I am very thankful for the sacrifices my mother made over the years, at many times forsaking her own needs in order to provide the family with food on the table and send me to the Philippines' top schools. In doing so, she gave me the capability to pursue my own destiny, which I am not about to throw away. In the Philippines, where extreme poverty is the rule rather than the exception, the decent life that she worked so hard for becomes so much more meaningful.
This is a primary force in my pursuit of an MBA at Goizueta. It is more than an advancement of a career and a step towards fulfilling my long-term corporate goals. More importantly, it is a challenge to live up to the values of determination and patience my mother taught me through her own example. This has been a primary motivation throughout my young life: as a student serious about my studies, as Vice President and Spiritual Committee Chairman of my college organization, and as an [deleted] Business Consultant making a sincere effort to address my clients' various business needs. My mother's example has truly been a focal point in my development as a persevering, values-oriented human being.
Thank you, Mom. I am sure watching me receive my MBA diploma will make you really proud of me.
