PAST: What choices have you made that led you to your current position?
PRESENT: Why is a Stern MBA necessary at this point in your life?
FUTURE: What is your desired position upon graduation from the Stern School?

PAST: What choices have you made that led you to your current position?

I secured 9th rank amongst half a million students in 12th grade examination. All premier institutions in India were within my reach. A chemical plant in the town always fascinated me. Vehicles, electronic devices, cement kiln developed a passion for engineering in me. After weighing pros and cons of all options and extrapolating myself into all possible roles, I decided to pursue chemical engineering as it offered me the diverse opportunities. I selected Punjab Technical University (PTU), as it is one of the best colleges for chemical engineering in India. By virtue of its experienced faculty, challenging atmosphere, and exhaustive curriculum, PTU has delivered wonderful results over decades.

PTU is known as a gateway to USA. Over 50% of its students pursue MS / Ph.D. at reputed schools in USA. My goal was different; I wanted to be an Entrepreneur. I realized that working with good companies and then pursuing an MBA at a reputed school was the best path to follow. India Chemicals Corp. (ICC), where I was selected in the campus recruitment program, suited my requirements as it promised me a wide exposure and high responsibility. I went through a well-structured training program and started working as a process engineer. I got an opportunity to apply my technical skills for resolving practical problems. I was instrumental in devising several profit improvement schemes. Because of these accomplishments, I was entrusted by the management to lead a team of ten engineers for increasing capacity of the plant. I did a good job as I successfully lead my team in designing and implementing the project.

Though I worked on technical assignments at ICC, I approached work in a very holistic way. I studied role of other departments, looked at the human aspects, and interacted with colleagues in other fields like finance and marketing. As I gained experience, I felt the need to consolidate my technical and functional knowledge. I applied for MBA program at few schools and received good response. Stern school interviewed me in January ’02. After a fruitful discussion, I was advised and encouraged to gain more experience and apply again. Meanwhile, the reputed schools in India like IIM and ISB selected me but I was firm on gaining more work experience and pursue MBA at one of the best schools in USA.

I joined Universal Petroleum Company (UPC) as Senior Engineer in March ’02 as it offered me a management position. Over the past year, I have lead team of engineers and business experts in objectively evaluating business decisions taken during the past months. We call it a Retro-analysis. Retro-analysis has helped UPC in improving profits. Our linear programming model has helped in crude selection, optimizing operating conditions and product pattern. I have developed strong understanding of oil economics and have used it to our advantage at UPC.

PRESENT: Why is a Stern MBA necessary at this point in your life?

FUTURE: What is your desired position upon graduation from the Stern School?

Over past 4 years I have worked in different companies, on different projects and in different roles. I started as a Process Engineer and I am an Assistant Manager today. I have understood the various technical, economic and humane aspects of the manufacturing industry in general and chemical industry in specific. I have understood the interrelation of various entities in an organization. I now need tools to help me understand this correlation. I need formal training and professional degree that will enable me to take higher responsibilities and grow as a professional.

I aspire to be an entrepreneur and lead a chemical manufacturing organization. I need knowledge of finance, marketing and business strategy. I must also be able to raise the resources and deploy them in the most effective and efficient manner. I am sure that the Stern MBA will provide me with all these skills. With its experience faculty, competitive environment and thorough curriculum, it is one of the best places to do MBA. I intend to specialize in the areas of entrepreneurship and financial management. NY exposure, the Berkeley Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, the CEO series, international exchange program, varied student organizations and business plan competition attracts me to Stern. The school team-building focus fosters the type of environment in which I will excel. I am certain that I will gain a great deal from my fellow students and contribute to their experiences at the Stern.

After graduation, I plan to work for about 2 years with an organization where I can apply the knowledge and skills gained during MBA. I envisage this organization to be a successful startup venture. This will give me hand on experience in starting and running an organization. Also a medium sized organization will ensure that I am exposed to variety of work areas and be able to apply business education effectively. My association with this organization should give me credibility as a professional and a business leader. At appropriate time and with resources, I will start my own venture. I will identify and analyze good ideas and capitalize on them.
